BIOGRAPHY OF JON TOIGO
"Toigo offers a fresh, no-holds-barred, commonsense perspective that resonates with IT professionals and business leaders alike."
Jon William Toigo is CEO and Managing Principal of Toigo Partners International LLC, an independent consultancy and information technology research & analysis firm focused on providing meaningful guidance to IT consumers and decision makers. He is also chairman of The Data Management Institute LLC, a professional development organization he founded for those who design, plan, manage and administer storage infrastructure and data assets.
He is a 20-year IT veteran who has worked both as an operative within corporate information systems departments and as a senior consultant with two international systems integrators. He is also a prolific writer with 15 books and thousands of articles in the technology trade press to his credit. His technology columns in seven popular print and on-line media garner a loyal readership of more than 500,000 per month worldwide.
In May 2003, Toigo founded Toigo Partners International as an alternative to current IT research & analyst practices that focus on "supply side" trends and largely fail to provide IT consumers with information they need to make informed and intelligent choices. Products offered by TPI focus on the business value that can be derived from technology acquisitions and feature methodologically consistent comparisons of competing solutions. TPI also facilitates developers of new technologies with guidance on product design that will enable them to deliver products that have real value to global consumers. The company has a presence in six countries.
Toigo also founded the Data Management Institute to encourage a greater sense of identity and community among IT professionals responsible for storage infrastructure management and data administration. DMI offers training and certification in storage management and data protection planning. It also provides a community where storage managers can compare notes and share views and experiences with respect to storage technologies. The goal of DMI is to establish data management as a profession within the IT field. Early strategic partners of the company included CMP Media LLC and Boston University.
Toigo has published over 2000 articles in the computer trade press, appearing in print and online media worldwide, including Computerworld, Network Computing, Scientific American, Washington Technology, Enterprise Systems Journal, SearchStorage, SNWOnline, and Storage Pipeline.
He has also written fifteen books, including The Holy Grail of Network Storage Management (Prentice Hall PTR: 2003), Disaster Recovery Planning 3rd Edition: Preparing for the Unthinkable (Prentice Hall PTR: 2002), The Holy Grail of Data Storage Management (Prentice Hall: 2000), and The Essential Guide to ASPs (Prentice Hall: 2001). Forthcoming titles include Cost-Containment: Evaluating and Implementing Business-Savvy IT Strategies, and The Truth about Regulatory Compliance, both due in 2005 from Pearson Education/Prentice Hall PTR.
In addition to his work in print, Toigo provides consulting and analysis services to a broad range of international clients, ranging from technology vendors to consumers. Past clients have included Adaptec, AT&T, BMC Software, Brocade Communications Systems, Cisco Systems, Compaq Computer Corporation, Computer Associates, EMC Corporation, Hewlett-Packard Company, IBM, Tek-Tools, and many others.
"Jon Toigo is the advocate of the technology consumer and a fanatic for IT products and architecture that deliver on their fundamental business value proposition. His columns inform and entertain more than 500,000 readers monthly. His presentations are always well attended and well received."
Toigo also facilitates corporate end users of information technology with strategic design and architecture advice, acquisition support and disaster recovery planning assistance. He has developed disaster recovery plans for 70 organizations and helped to form one of the first DR user groups in the US, the Disaster Avoidance and Recovery Information Group (DARING) in the late 1980s.
Jon is recognized as a highly effective speaker who blends lighthearted humor and engaging storytelling with insightful narrative to deliver talks that are both entertaining and informative, even on technically complex topics. He enjoys excellent approval ratings from audiences in the USA, Central and South America, Europe, and Australia.
He chairs the storage education tracks for Networld+Interop and for TECHXNY, and frequently appears as a speaker, moderator or panelist at industry conferences ranging from Storage Networking World in the USA and Europe to Forum Stockage in France to Terrapinn’s Storage World Conferences in Australia, Dubai, Singapore and South Africa.
Toigo holds a Masters Degree from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, and was awarded with an Honorary Doctorate by Universidad Abierta Interamericana in Buenos Aires, Argentina in September in recognition of his contributions in the fields of data storage technology and its management, IT business value assessment, and disaster recovery planning. He has spoken at professional conferences around the world and periodically delivers instructional programs within the MBA and Computer Science Departments of leading colleges and universities.
He is married to his business partner, Margaret Romao Toigo, who illustrates and edits his books and serves as CFO for the company.
When he isn't working, Jon fills his time with six children, extended family and friends, and engages in hobbies that include shooting, music, and cooking.
